Causes of Missing Speeds on Older Fans: Fan Pull Chain II: The fan pull chain switch may be bad if you can not feel the switch click from speed to speed. Or it may be bad if the chain has been pulled out of it. Wall Speed Control: If you have a three speed pull chain fan but also have a wall control switch which controls your fan speeds, the switch on the fan must be pulled to the highest speed. If the fan chain is pulled to a low or medium setting, and then you turn your wall switch down to a lower speed setting, the fan will not have enough current to run. If the fan chain is left long term in any other position than the high speed position damage to your fan and to your switch may occur due to overheating. Wall Speed Control II: These controls have a limited life span. If your wall control is missing one or more speeds replace it with a 3 or 4 speed fan control. You may want to take out your wall control switch out of the wall and try a new wall switch to see if this solves the problem. Reverse Switch: This should be in a distinct position. Flip the switch back and forth to make sure it is not stuck in a middle position. Bad Windings: Sometimes motor windings which control one or more speeds can break. This happens over time to many promotional grade or moderate grade fans which were installed in high-use areas. Windings can not be repaired and a new fan must be purchased. Capacitor: The capacitor can wear out causing a loss of one or more speeds. Usually when these go out they will create heat which will distort or melt the outer casing of the capacitor. |
