What Size and How Many Ceiling Fans to use
CEILING FANS, SHOP BY SIZE < click on link

Here is a basic chart showing what size ceiling fan to use in relation to room size. How large a ceiling fan should be is more a matter of aesthetics rather than performance. Why? All ceiling fans are not the same, they use different motors and have different blade pitches which means some higher quality 42 inch ceiling fans are capable of moving more air than some of the lower quality 52" fans. When selecting a fan size you want to pick a fan that would look best in the room. The larger the room, aesthetically; the larger the ceiling fan. If you want maximum air movement in your room then purchase ceiling fans based on the size and design of its motor. Most common error consumers make is buying a too small ceiling fan.

VAULTED CEILINGS:
When a ceiling fan mounts on an angled ceiling you will need to drop the fan on a longer downrod.  The downrod must be long enough to allow the blades to clear the angled ceiling and allow for space between the ceiling and the blade tips. Here are the minimum requirements based on your pitch & angle. You may desire to use longer downrods than indicated here depending on your ceiling height. Ceiling fans which are mounted on angled ceilings over 30 degrees may require the purchase of an additional slope ceiling adaptor kit.

Pitch Angle Minimum Downrod  Pitch Angle Minimum Downrod

2/12 9.46 6" (if available ) 8/12 33.7 24"

6/12 26.5 18" 12/12 45 36"

CEILING HEIGHT: ceiling fan poles view selection
How far down your ceiling fan hangs is a matter of personnel preference. When you ask different salespeople how long a downrod you should use, or view charts in manufacturer's catalogs, you will get a variety of different answers in response to your question. Of course the fan must drop down far enough for the blades to clear any angled or vaulted ceilings. Beyond this minimum clearance the overall length is really up to you. In theory the lower the ceiling fan hangs the more air velocity you will feel when you stand directly underneath the fan. The lower the fan is the more "focused" the area where you will feel a breeze (ie more breeze over smaller area.) This is desirable in warmer climates where the primary purpose of the ceiling fan is cooling. If the fan is left high up, you will not feel as much breeze in terms of velocity of air blowing past you, but the ceiling fan will disperse air over a larger area. In northern climates where heat recovery is a concern, ceiling fans tend to be mounted higher in the ceiling as to assist in moving the air from the higher portion of the ceiling back down. GRADES OF CEILING FANS: To Shop for Ceiling Fans click here
Performance Grade: These are the real ceiling fans, they were responsible in the late 1970s for bringing ceiling fans back into use. These ceiling fans are durable, well constructed, have large motors, stay quiet, move functional amounts of air (even at low speed). You can run these types of ceiling fans continuously for days or years and they keep working. Find ceiling fans like these priced from about $189 - 299.99 plus. Traditional looks with Designer Styles & finishes $279 - 1,000

Medium Grade: This kind of ceiling fan has been designed with price in mind. Construction ,motors and other components were selected with price in mind. These ceiling fans are a step down from Performance grade but still have a high level of durability and function. Lamp Depot feels these fans function well in rooms with ceiling heights up to 12' and where the normal continuous running time of the ceiling fan is 12 hours and under. Expect to find ceiling fans like these priced from about $99 - 149.99 with traditional looks  or from $129 - $299 with Designer Styles and finishes.

Moderate or Economy Grade: These ceiling fans have been designed with lower prices in mind. Lower grade, motors and other components were selected for price, rather than performance. These ceiling fans are a step down from Medium grade but still have good durability and function in selected locations. Lamp Depot feels such fans function well in rooms with 8' ceiling heights, where normal continuous running time is 6-8 hours and under. This type of fan moves noticeably less air than Performance or Medium grade fans. Expect to find ceiling fans like these priced from about $49 - 149.99.

Contractor Grade: Sounds good but these ceiling fans have been designed with lower prices in mind. Used in multi unit using or when the builder or electrician has to put in the fan.... its not a fan most people would knowingly put in their home. Lower grade, motors and other components were selected for price, rather than performance. This type of fan moves noticeably less air than other above mentioned fans. Expect to find ceiling fans like these priced from about $39 - 69.99.

Promotional Grade: Lamp Depot feels such fans are not useful and we don't carry this grade of ceiling fan. This type of fan moves noticeably less air tends to have sounds when running and finish flaws. Keep in mind when a Hammer, Plastic Tool Box, or Garden Hose would cost more than a ceiling fan.; don't have high expectations.
These ceiling fans are priced from about $19 -39.99 without light $29-99.00 with light

#1 Bedrooms
Once you have had a ceiling fan in a bedroom you will always have one there. It's incredible how ceiling fans can keep you comfortable and allow you to reduce or eliminate air conditioning those areas of the home you are not in.

Guest Bedrooms-- These areas should have 52" ceiling fans whenever possible. Don't worry about the fan looking too big. When the fan is used, the 52" size will move more air at lower speeds than smaller 42" or 36" ceiling fans. Using a white fan in rooms with white ceilings can make the 52" fan seem much smaller. Remember when the room is used you'll want your guests to be comfortable.
>>Avoid Promo Grade fans.>>>USE these grades: Moderate, Medium , or Performance Grade.

Children's Bedrooms-- Use a 52" fan whenever possible ( 42" in smaller than 10x10 rooms ) and use close to ceiling models or huggers when you'll be having a light on your ceiling fan and plan to walk underneath it.

#3 Rooms with High Ceilings,CEILING FANS, SHOP BY SIZE < click on link
Ceiling fans de-stratify the air, which makes a big difference during the cooler months of the heating season. If your home has a loft area, ceiling fans can make a remarkable difference. Strong heat sources such as fireplaces and wood stoves send dramatic amounts of heat up to the ceiling where your fan recaptures and sends the heat back to where you are.

Vaulted ceilings-- These areas should have 52" ceiling fans and often can use 2 or more fans. Angles up to 30 degrees can be accommodated by most ceiling fan models. For over 35 degree angles optional kits or platforms will be needed. These rooms often require a DOWN ROD to lower the fan.
